Advice on the events industry

Posted on 01 July 2021

The events industry is a popular choice for recent graduates but how do you break into such a competitive industry? And what does a job in events really entail? The term 'events' is quite generic so make sure you identify what you really want to do before you start applying. For example, at Albany Appointments, we specialise in recruitment for the B2B Conference & Events sector as opposed to say party planning or agency-based roles.

A lot of experience can be gained before you graduate. Firstly, volunteering at any events at University or even organising your own event proves that you have a real interest in the industry. Secondly, any kind of work experience or internship is a great way to prove you’re willing to work hard to succeed. Another idea is to create an events addendum, a portfolio containing details such as the kind of events you’ve been involved in, your role in the event, the number of attendees, location etc. Alternatively, you could set up a blog about your event experiences. These are great ways to build up experience and make your CV stand out from the crowd.

Some events companies offer graduate schemes but, like the events industry as a whole, these are very competitive so you may not be lucky enough to get a place. It is worth applying to as many entry-level jobs as you can and if you don’t have any luck at first, just going to the interviews will give you interview experience and increase your confidence for the next time.

Event organising is a vocation so should be something you’re passionate about and even though there may be a struggle period at the start, once you’re established in the industry there are great career opportunities.   It’s also worth remembering that your first role isn’t necessarily going to be the job you work in forever. However, it is going to give you invaluable experience so use it to your advantage. Do also keep in mind that events jobs are often relatively low paid and expectations from employers are high. On the plus side, it is an exciting industry to work in and can be very rewarding, so if you are passionate about working in events then work hard, don’t give up and eventually you’ll make it!
